A Phase I’m Going Through.

Tony Jones is the legendary founder of Encounter Overland. He has written this memoir of his life, with the help of Trish Burt.

This is a fast-moving account of Adventure Travel, from one of the founding fathers of this challenging tourism format. It addresses many of the milestones in the global story of Overland and Adventure Travel. Adventure Travel was in its heyday, and it had not been an altogether minor factor in quite a few lives. It was a phenomenon of youth, and this memoir is a record about three key and distinct players in that slice of those times:
ENCOUNTER OVERLAND
HIMALAYA ENCOUNTERS
SUNDOWNERS

Available on Amazon, the book has already attracted lively reviews and encourages different options and insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read

A view of the world as it was in the second half of the twentieth century. A world changed forever by long haul flights and cruise ships. A view of life then for many varied cultures from the Andes to the Himalayas and the Sahara to the Gobi. Written with skill and humour this should encourage a new generation to seek out new horizons beyond the confines of AI and PC.
It sits on my bookshelf beside TE Lawrence and Antoine de Saint Exupery. It deserves its place there.

Tony Jones has led a true life of adventure, that with the travel companies he created and ran allowed many to engage in diverse experiences that would otherwise not have been easily available to them. His books (three in one) give detail and clarity to his achievements. A worthy read!!

Having met Tony Jones and driven the Asia overland in the 1970s, this is a wonderful record of the establishment of Encounter Overland against all the odds. A fascinating account of his early life, numerous worldwide explorations and later life in Nepal. This is a comprehensive and well written account. Thank you for this.

Tony Jones’s account of his life is a timely reminder of life and travel before the internet and mobile phones, when people would set off to lead expeditions across continents equipped only with their sense of adventure and some basic training. Tony is an engaging raconteur and his book is a wonderful account of a fulfilled life odyssey. Carpe Diem.

5.0 out of 5 stars An autobiography of a life of adventurous travel across the world
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 April 2023

This is a book about the life of the founder of Encounter Overland – a company which existed from 1964 to 2001 – taking adventurous people on expeditions across the world, mostly in Asia, Africa and South America.

But, this is not just a book about Encounter Overland, it is also an extremely well-written and readable account of Tony’s whole life, from his birth in war-torn London to his retirement in Pokhara, Nepal.

The book recounts, in some detail, Tony’s remarkable life of adventure travel across the globe. It stands up very well in comparison with adventure travel books by the likes of Paul Theroux, Dervla Murphy et al.
